Just Saying ‘Hey’!

Hey everyone, we don’t have much to say tonight.  Nothing much is new.  Still waiting on Lexi’s cyclosporine to arrive but she is doing well, really not itchy at all today and her ear looks great.  Zev continues to try out his new food from THK and loves it.  He has really only had a few spoonfuls worth so far, but he is definitely eager to eat it.  The marketing coordinator from THK is sending us a trial-size box of Keen (the sample pouches they sent barely lasted him a meal each!  That’s what we get for having a 100 pound dog…) and I will continue to review the food and chronicle Zev’s transition off dry kibble.

Some good news I just learned of is that another one of HDR’s foster dogs, Eshe, has been adopted!  Woohoo, go Eshe!  A puppy, Luna, was also adopted the very same day that HDR pulled her into rescue from a shelter.  Congrats to all and a job well done by Handsome Dan’s Rescue!  Lexi loves you all and is so happy that other dogs like her have found their forever homes!

So, that’s it for us.  I thought I would just share a few pictures tonight before I settle in.  Thank you all for your love and support!

Goodnight friends!

An Uneventful Monday

Hi everyone!  Today was pretty uneventful, aside from receiving Zev’s samples of The Honest Kitchen “Keen” in the mail today for us to try.  Keen is a low gluten, adult maintenance formula for all breeds and sizes.  It is one of the least expensive formulas from THK yet also provides dogs with sensitivities a balanced and complete nutrition.  John and I are looking to switch Zev from his Purina dry kibble to THK and Keen was recommended to us by THK’s product specialist.  Zev is very healthy but does experience some skin sensitivities a few times each month.  His issues are nothing like what Lexi faces, but he does get itchy and we want him to be comfortable.  A low gluten food like Keen might help to relieve some of his itchies.  He is also getting older (he will be 7 in June!) and we want to give him the best nutrition possible to ensure his “golden years” with Lexi are comfortable and wonderful.  John gave him his first taste of Keen at dinner today – he hydrated a spoonful of it and mixed it with his kibble, as a start.  He ate it up without hesitation, per usual!  Tomorrow I will add in a little more Keen and we will gradually increase the amount of Keen and decrease the amount of kibble until he has fully transitioned off his dry food.  I have received a few free samples of Keen from THK, so we can try it out for a few days before we purchase a box of it.  Denise from Dogs in Harmony  has offered to order Keen through her shop if we decide we want to purchase it.  Meanwhile, Lexi still LOVES The Honest Kitchen “Thrive” and really is thriving on it!  I honestly had never heard of THK before we took an interest in adopting Lexi and starting reading Laurelin’s blog.  After doing some research of my own I am really impressed with the company and the quality of its products, especially with so many recent recalls and scares revolving around popular commercial food and treats.

So, that’s about it for today.  The dogs spent most of this slushy, wintery day relaxing on the couch and napping.  Lexi’s right ear looked much better today.  Still a little itchy, so we gave her a few ear drops again, but otherwise all is well.  Enjoy a few pictures!

Field Trip!

Hey there!  Today was the perfect day for a “field trip”.  John and I decided to take both dogs for a ride (in one car, which was a complete non-issue) up to Johnston to Dogs In Harmony.  Lexi was very excited to see Denise, one of her favorite people, who owns Dogs In Harmony, and excited for all of the dog-related smells in Denise’s shop.  Zev wasn’t all that excited to be there – we think he mistakenly thought we were at a vet’s office, and he is huge baby for the vet.  He sniffed around a bit and then stood staring at the door!  He warmed up to it after a few minutes, though, and especially after some butt scratches from Denise and her volunteer.  Lexi was a bit anxious as well but was well-behaved, per usual, and clearly happy to see her friends and show them how happy she is.  Toward the end of the visit Zev gained his confidence back and relaxed once he realized he wasn’t due for any more shots, and Lexi then relaxed too and enjoyed the attention.  Zev is a great, calm teacher and Lexi really feeds off his energy, which is probably 99% relaxed and composed.  Our brief visit to Dogs in Harmony went really well for her first real “field trip” out in public with us.

In addition, we got a great deal on a 10-pound box of Lexi’s dehydrated food, The Honest Kitchen Thrive.  Denise has given Lexi a life-time discount of 15% off anything Lexi might need, and I also had a coupon from THK newsletter for $5 off a purchase of $50 or more.  In the end we got a 10-pound box of Thrive for $51, which is a great deal!  It retails on THK website for $69.99 plus shipping costs, so we are more than happy to support a local business and receive a much discounted price at the same time.  The 10-pound box should last us several weeks.  Thanks Denise!

Otherwise, today was spent relaxing on the couch and cooking (I made homemade baked mac and cheese – yumm!).  The dogs continue to get along wonderfully, and get closer and closer every day.  They hang out in the house freely when we are home – they sniff each other, rub shoulders, play with their own toys, etc., and Lexi follows Zev around like a puppy follows its mom.  We have not yet allowed them to really play together, though; both are rough players and we want to be sure we know Lexi as well as we know Zev before we take that next step.  Baby steps, but slow and steady works wonderfully for us!

Also, we are still waiting on Lexi’s Cyclosporine to arrive from the compounding company.  We have been treating her with OTC allergy relief meds for itchiness and redness as needed.  She is so good about taking meds with a spoonful of pumpkin!  Her right ear, which has had some issues in the past, also looked a bit red this morning and she was scratching at it.  We gave her a few drops of her ear meds and that gave her relief.  We will do this again tomorrow if need be.  Otherwise, Lex is looking pretty good.  Her skin looks good, her coats is soft and shiny, and her paws were not so sensitive today (nor did they bleed at all).  Learning the best ways to manage her allergies and other issues is a tricky process that will hopefully be made easier with a constant dosage of cyclosporine in her system.  It is also extremely helpful to know what steps Laurelin took to manage her issues while she was in foster care.  Lexi’s spirits are high, of course, and she is an absolute lovebug!  She makes the extra work to keep her comfortable and healthy completely worth it.

So, that’s it for today.  I am giggling at Lexi right now – she is asleep on the couch with John and making all sorts of strange noises in her sleep.  I hope you all enjoy a few pictures!

Bath Day, Followed By Cuddling

Hi everyone!  Today was bath day for Lexi, her first while with us.  She needs a weekly bath with medicated shampoo and today was the perfect day.  I packed up our laundry, Lexi, and some of her toys and treats and took a ride to my parents’ house, about half an hour away.  She was very excited when we first arrived – she had to check out every corner of the house and chew her antler with vigor.  She quickly discovered the couch and approved of it right away.  She was a very good girl for her bath, as expected, and spent the rest of the afternoon hanging around on the couch while I finished our laundry.

Meanwhile, John took Zev out for the day with his brother, Christian, to visit their mom in Hope Valley.  We thought it would be a good idea for each of the dogs to have a day out with one of us to (temporarily) be an only dog and receive lots of individual attention.  This worked wonderfully, because when Lexi and I returned home to Zev, something amazing happened.  Each dog was quietly curled up on a separate couch, Lexi sharing a couch with me.  I got up to begin putting laundry away, keeping a cautious eye on the pair, when Zev got up from his couch and took the now-empty spot next to Lexi.  They sniffed each other briefly and then Zev simply curled up in a ball to match Lex.  I really think he missed her today and wanted to spend some quiet time close to her!  They both napped for almost an hour together, and then Zev quickly returned to the other couch.  It might seem like a pretty insignificant happening, but this is one of our “firsts” and wonderful progress for two dogs still getting used to one another and the changing dynamic of our household.  This is especially awesome because it was completely initiated by Zev, who usually doesn’t want to be bothered by Lexi.  Progress continues slowly, but we are setting our dogs up to have a wonderful and safe relationship with each other, and that is what is most important to us.  Now, for the photographic evidence:

One Week!

As of today we have had Lexi for one week.  It feels like so much longer!  It has been such a great week and we couldn’t be happier.  We are so incredibly lucky to have this beautiful girl in our lives.  Despite an awful start to life, Lexi has opened her heart to us and given us her trust.  We promise you, Lexi, that we will never betray the trust you have placed in us.  We promise to give you belly rubs, soft blankets to sleep on, kisses on your little brown nose, good food to keep you healthy, and the medical care you need to continue to heal.  We will give you the forever home you deserve, the life you have always dreamed of.  You deserve nothing less.

Now, for tonight’s final picture, the highlight of today:

napping butt-to-butt!

napping butt-to-butt!

We had some brief butt-to-butt lounging on the couch today!  We are still moving carefully – Zev does get a bit jealous when Lexi gets our attention and he is still getting used to sharing his house with another dog.  Even so, he and Lexi both have been wonderful and patient with each other, and really like each other.  Pretty awesome, especially for a big, dominant, dog-selective moose and a rescue with a pretty mysterious past wrought with neglect.  John and I are so proud of these two and the progress we are all making.  With some more time we will see more and more of these two cuddling on the same couch.

Well, that’s it for tonight.  Tomorrow has been designated as bath day for Lexi at my parents’ house in their huge bathtub!  I am sure she will be a good girl for me :).  Till tomorrow!

Getting closer!

Hey there!  I will keep today’s post short and sweet.  We have reached another important and exciting milestone.  I will let you see for yourself…

Zev gets a little jealous of Lexi still, so Dad gives him lots of love and attention.

This was today’s big step – allowing the dogs a little more freedom during their supervised time together.  Of course, Lexi headed straight for the nearest couch and parked herself next to John.  Zev left his couch and parked himself on the other side of John to get some attention as well.  Apparently, after I left for work, John fell asleep with Lexi in his arms on one couch and Zev peacefully napped on the other couch.  Yay for peaceful coexistence!  I love these dogs so much!

Lex has also met a few of our friends and family members and has been nothing but an angel.  We introduce her to people slowly and within minutes (more like seconds, with some people) she is wagging her tail at the visitor and trying to cuddle up on them on the couch.  So, I will leave today’s post at that, supplemented by some more cute pictures, of course.
